EABC’S EFFORTS FOR A HEALTHIER AND MORE PRODUCTIVE WORKFORCE IN THE EAC
Despite the efforts to fight against HIV and AIDS over the decades, cases for new infections rose in the EAC, this is complicated further with the process of deepening Integration with increased movement of workers and businesses. Human resources remain the key asset for businesses, affecting productivity and the bottom line. To ensure that the region achieves a healthier and productive workforce the EABC begun a program in 2009 with the support of GTZ-SPAA, to enhance positive Private Sector response to the problem of HIV and AIDS. EABC urged for workplace policies to incorporate HIV and AIDS into occupational Health and Safety programs and urged Business leaders to take up health financing for staff in the company budget, including resources for HIV and AIDS management. EABC also conducted a regional CEO Testing Day for HIV and AIDS, Diabetes, Tuberculosis on 11th November 2010, where over 200 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in East Africa underwent health testing. The Regional CEO Testing day was organized by the EABC in partnership with Burundi Association of Employers, Kenya HIV and AIDS Private Sector Business Council, Rwanda Private Sector Federation and the Federation of Uganda Employers.
EAST AFRICAN HEALTH PLATFORM (EAHP)
EAHP is an advocacy platform for PSOs, CSOs, FBOs and Other Interest Groups on Health in East Africa. The EAHP and EABC signed a collaborative MOU in 2013, a common area of interest between EABC and EAHP is the “health wellbeing of the East Africa citizens” and being facilitative platforms, the two partners commit to share space and maximize on their comparative advantages while improving the ability of each of the constituency members to effective delivery of health outcomes and benefit from supportive health policy and legal environment. Specific sector areas for cooperation includes, Health Policy Advocacy, Institutional strengthening and Development and Partnerships for growth.
