SUMMARY:WTO TFA Workshop\, Zanzibar
DESCRIPTION:Zanzibar workshop to boost knowledge\, skills on the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement \nOn 26th – 27th May 2021\, The International Trade Centre (ITC) in partnership with the East African Business Council (EABC) are carrying out a workshop for trade practitioners in Burundi on the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA). Organized as part of the European Union-East African Community Market Access Programme (MARKUP)\, the event will take place in Zanzibar. \nAfter successfully holding similar national events in Dar es salaam and Kilimanjaro-Tanzania\, Nairobi and Mombasa-Kenya\, and in Uganda the TFA workshop in Zanzibar – aims to equip The United Republic of Tanzania and\, more broadly\, East African local business-support associations and traders\, with a comprehensive knowledge of the TFA with a view to identify obstacles to cross-border and advocate for their removal. The TFA workshops will also be held in Rwanda & Zanzibar as well. \nThe training has been developed in response to persistent delays and red tape hampering the movement of goods across borders in East Africa. Among the members of the East African Community (EAC)\, inefficient trade procedures and non-tariff barriers represent an obstacle to expanded intra-regional trade and deepened regional integration. Trade facilitation – the simplification\, modernization and harmonization of export and import processes – has thus become a key issue for the global trade system and for regional economic communities\, such as the EAC\, to create new opportunities for businesses that are operating in regional and international markets. \nWith provisions to speed up the movement\, release and clearance of goods\, the WTO TFA – which entered into force in February 2017 – represents a viable option to resolve cross-border trade inefficiencies. \nAs a result of this regional MARKUP initiative\, project stakeholders will achieve greater sensitization on the need to simplify cross-border trade procedures and to ensure greater inclusion of the private sector in public-private dialogue platforms responsible for the implementation of the TFA at the national level. \nThis capacity-building initiative is an extension of the efforts undertaken since the entry into force in 2017 of the TFA\, and is part of a collaboration between EABC in partnership with the EAC Secretariat and ITC through the financial contribution of the European Union. \n[Members of the media wishing to attend the workshop or speak to representatives of the International Trade Centre or the East African Business Council are requested to use the contact information below.]\nNote to editors \nAbout the International Trade Centre (ITC) – The International Trade Centre (ITC) is the joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations based in Geneva\, Switzerland. ITC helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing and transition countries to connect and become more competitive in global markets\, contributing to the sustainable economic development in the Aid for Trade agenda and to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. \nFor more information please visit: http://www.intracen.org \nFollow ITC on Facebook\, Twitter\, LinkedIn and Instagram. \nAbout the East African Business Council (EABC) – The East African Business Council (EABC) is the regional apex body of private sector associations and corporates in East Africa with a single purpose of driving the East African Community (EAC) integration process through trade and investment. To achieve this EABC works with the public sector\, EAC institutions\, the academia and the business community to unlock the economic potential through increased access to markets\, enhanced trade environment and improved business competitiveness. \nFor more information\, please visit: http://eabc-online.com \nFollow EABC on Facebook\, Twitter\, LinkedIn and YouTube. \nAbout EU-EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP) – The EU-EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP) is a four-year regional development initiative that aims to contribute to the economic growth of the EAC region. The programme assists small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Burundi\, Kenya\, Rwanda\, Tanzania and Uganda by targeting specific agricultural commodities. More specifically\, it aims to support increased exports of agribusiness and horticultural products\, promote regional integration and enhance the participation of SMEs in intra-regional trade and exports to the European market. MARKUP is funded under the 11th European Development Fund and is implemented by ITC\, the United Nations Organization for Industrial Development and the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit and other national partners.

SUMMARY:WTO TRADE FACILITATION AGREEMENT (TFA) WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:Entered into force in February 2017\, the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) aims to remove administrative barriers to cross-border trade\, such as unnecessary customs controls\, excessive data and documents collection\, lack of coordination between border agencies and ineffective rules and procedures. All of these obstacles in import\, export and transit operations affect considerably the cost of trade\, delaying the movement of goods. \nThese costs are extremely expensive for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) because they often lack the capacity to comply with complex regulations and procedural rules for import\, export and transit. The TFA is therefore an important instrument for governments to improve the business climate in which businesses can thrive. Capitalizing on this Agreement will reduce costs\, delays and transaction processes for merchants\, enabling them to internationalize cheaper and faster. While the implementation of the TFA is the primary responsibility of the governments of the WTO Members\, business and trade support institutions nevertheless play a vital role in informing the authorities on how best to implement the Trade Facilitation Agreement in the national context. \nWithin the framework of the EU-EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP)\, the International Trade Centre (ITC) is partnering with the East African Community (EAC)\, the East African Business Council (EABC) to organize a two-day workshop on the TFA for the private sector. \nThe workshop aims to explain to businesses in Rwanda the terms\, potential benefits and practical use of each of the technical measures of this new Agreement. By the end of the workshop\, it is expected that participating enterprises and organizations will be equipped to successfully take advantage of the TFA and contribute to the design\, implementation and monitoring of trade facilitation reforms. \nEABC is delighted to invite you to participate in this two-day capacity-building workshop scheduled to take place on 25th & 26th February 2021 at Lake Naivasha Resort\, Kenya. \nKindly confirm your participation to Mr. Brian Kalekye – EABC National Liaison Officer\, via Email: bkalekye@eabc-online.com  Tel: +254 712 385870 with a copy to Geoffrey Kamanzi ( EABC) Email: gkamanzi@eabc-online.com Tel:+255 788 307165

SUMMARY:KUSI IDEAS FESTIVAL: TOWARDS A POST-COVID AFRICA
DESCRIPTION:Kusi II will be held on December 8th and 9th\, 2020 a hybrid in-person and virtual conference with the first day being the Pan-African event\, and the second day an East African event\, focused on modern cities (a primer for the Africities Summit in 2021 in Kisumu) and the Lake Victoria Region Blue Economy. \nIn an unprecedented moment in Africa’s history\, the Covid-19 pandemic has severely impacted countries large and small. The global economy is predicted to lose $12 trillion\, or more\, by the end of 2021 even with the $18 trillion that has already been spent to stimulate economies around the world. \nSome economies in Africa have shrunk the most in 40 years\, and South Africa\, the most in 100 years. The pandemic is projected to send 50 million Sub-Saharan Africans into poverty\, a huge setback that would erase several years of hard-won progress. In the worst case\, Africa will only return to 2019 levels in 2030. \nIn light of the above\, Africa has demonstrated remarkable resilience and innovation. This festival will bring together the best insights and innovations in dealing with the impact of the virus in the economic\, health\, educational\, social areas to generate ideas for overcoming the crisis. \nIt will also look at experiences that are transferable; what to be avoided; how might we foolproof the future against the kind of ravages\, that have been visited by Covid-19; and to draw a picture of what a post-Covid Africa might look like. \nRegistration (at no cost) on the website: www.kusiideasfestival.com

SUMMARY:Continental Forum on the Impact of COVID-19 on Free Movement of Persons in Africa
DESCRIPTION:The year 2020 has been one of the most challenging times to movement of persons in the entire world due tothe corona virus that has endangered the human species. \nIn a bid to curb the rapid spread\, all countries in the world\, took measures to curb the spread of the virus and some of these measures included quarantine and isolation measures\, closure of public spaces\, closure of borders\, airports and instituted measures for only frontline workers and essential services. In some countries\, it necessitated partial and even total lockdown. \nIn practical terms\, this meant the paralysis of most means of transport by air\, sea and land in a bid to curb or at least slow the spread of the virus through cross border interactions. With time\, there has been some progress with some countries re-opening fully while for others\, it’s still on a slow-motion basis. \nIn 2018\, the African Union in implementing its flagship project on free movement of persons in Africa and the African passport\, adopted the Protocol to the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Communities relating to Right of Entry\, Right of Residence and Right of Establishment; as well as adopted the Guidelines on the Production\, and issuance of the African Passport. The Protocol provides for temporary closure of borders and denial of entry to individuals on health and security considerations. Therefore\, the closures and limited access seen on the continent were not in contravention of the Protocol\, but were not without challenges\, which if not addressed could have long lasting implications on the Free Movement Agenda in Africa. \nPURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE CONTINENTAL FORUM \nThe continental forum on Impact of COVID-19 on Free Movement of Persons in Africa is meant to:\n• Bring all stakeholders (Member States\, RECs\, Partners\, Civil Society\, Private Sector\, youth and common citizens among others) to exchange ideas\, experiences and build synergy on collective efforts to enhance free movement of persons in Africa\, and to do so safely amidst COVID-19;\n• Provide a forum in which Member States and RECs can reflect on the effects of COVID 19 on free movement in their respective countries and regions and ensure measures/guidelines developed for ease of movement of persons and goods/services enhance movement of persons in Africa in safety. \nEXPECTED OUTCOMES \nBy the end of the continental meeting on the Impact of COVID-19 on Free Movement of Persons in Africa the following would have been achieved: \n• An understanding of how Member States and RECs manage free movement during the pandemic (challenges\, opportunities and mechanisms put in place to ensure safety during movement);\n• An understanding of the re-opening processes in different parts and suggestion on how they can be handled better.\nCreate synergies between free movement policies and practice\, in the actual implementation of these normative frameworks and how they affect other relevant sectors such as the continental free trade area\, the private sector and travel for the common citizen whose movement is affected by the pandemic \nEvent Website: Continental Forum on the Impact of COVID-19 on Free Movement of Persons in Africa | African Union (au.int)
