The East African Community (EAC) has been recognized as the most advanced Regional Economic Community (REC) in terms of overall integration among the eight RECs in Africa. This distinction is attributed to its impressive performance in free movement of people, macroeconomic integration, and infrastructure integration. The two indicators which EAC has not registered impressive performance are trade integration and productive integration. However, despite global economic challenges, the EAC economy has demonstrated resilience, with a projected growth rate of 5.48% in 2024, up from 4.9% in 2023. Intra-EAC trade saw a growth of 13.1%, reaching USD 12.1 billion in 2023, but still remains at 15% of share of total EAC trade, indicating significant potential for further growth.
The EABC CEOs-EAC Secretary General Round Table aims to outline and present private sector policy advocacy priorities and discuss the progress on the implementation of EAC commitments to enhance intra and extra-EAC trade and investment. Discussions will focus on trade and investment barriers faced by the private sector and propose solutions. There will be a panel discussion on topical matters and Q&A sessions. The role of the private sector in the EAC integration agenda will also be deliberated. Additionally, a one-on-one session will be organized between business leaders and the Secretary General of the EAC.
