Kusi II will be held on December 8th and 9th, 2020 a hybrid in-person and virtual conference with the first day being the Pan-African event, and the second day an East African event, focused on modern cities (a primer for the Africities Summit in 2021 in Kisumu) and the Lake Victoria Region Blue Economy.
In an unprecedented moment in Africa’s history, the Covid-19 pandemic has severely impacted countries large and small. The global economy is predicted to lose $12 trillion, or more, by the end of 2021 even with the $18 trillion that has already been spent to stimulate economies around the world.
Some economies in Africa have shrunk the most in 40 years, and South Africa, the most in 100 years. The pandemic is projected to send 50 million Sub-Saharan Africans into poverty, a huge setback that would erase several years of hard-won progress. In the worst case, Africa will only return to 2019 levels in 2030.
In light of the above, Africa has demonstrated remarkable resilience and innovation. This festival will bring together the best insights and innovations in dealing with the impact of the virus in the economic, health, educational, social areas to generate ideas for overcoming the crisis.
It will also look at experiences that are transferable; what to be avoided; how might we foolproof the future against the kind of ravages, that have been visited by Covid-19; and to draw a picture of what a post-Covid Africa might look like.
